Media Release: Atmo Biosciences Receives FDA Clearance for Gastrointestinal (GI) Contractility Frequency Map

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA & SAN DIEGO, USA, 26 May 2026

Atmo Biosciences, a leader in ingestible capsule technology, announced that it has received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for a new Contractility Frequency Map feature as an enhancement to the existing Atmo Gas Capsule System.

This clinically valuable feature is a visualisation of gastrointestinal contractions based on measurements of the Capsule movement caused by gastrointestinal pressures and contractions. The addition of this feature enables clinicians to see the different rates and intensities of contractile activity in the stomach, small bowel, and colon. These mechanical data provide insights into physiology and help confirm the device’s location at a given time, complementing existing outputs from the Atmo Capsule that identify transitions from one region of the gastrointestinal tract to another. These measurements provide regional and whole gut transit times, used for the diagnosis of highly prevalent dysmotility conditions such as gastroparesis and slow transit constipation. The Atmo Capsule delivers this information in one convenient test without exposure to radiation, and allows the patient to go about their daily activities for the duration.

The addition of this newly cleared contractility feature, which is grounded in established gastrointestinal motility principles reflected in electrogastrography and manometry, enhances the interpretability of the outputs generated by the Atmo Capsule and provides additional information which improves clinical utility of the device.

The contractility feature was the subject of two posters which won awards as Posters of Distinction at the recent DDW conference in Chicago, which is the world’s largest Gastroenterology conference. A Journal article on the utility of the contractility feature has also been published in Neurogastroenterology & Motility (Hasler et al. 2026).

Dr. William L. Hasler, of Mayo Clinic, noted; “The ability to measure contractility directly, together with simultaneous measurements of transit times, will position the Atmo Capsule as a valuable tool for providing comprehensive, objective assessments of gut physiology. ”

Mal Hebblewhite, President and CEO of Atmo Biosciences, commented on the new capability: “The addition of the Contractility Frequency Map is an example of Atmo’s commitment to address unmet clinical needs through R&D and innovation. By capturing gastrointestinal contractions and pressures derived from the capsule’s movement, we are providing clinicians with complementary data that enhances patient care.”

The Contractility Frequency Map is now included as a standard feature in the existing FDA-cleared Atmo Gas Capsule System. The feature will deploy to existing customers automatically on June 8th by virtue of Atmo’s cloud-connected system.

The Atmo Gas Capsule is currently an investigational device exclusively for use in clinical investigations and is not available for sale.
